Closeup splendid rich mosaic
High Resolution JPEG Picture of A close-up of the splendid and rich mosaic decorations and marble carvings that surround the three doors on the gothic facade of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in the medieval town of Orvieto, in Umbria, central Italy. The construction of the magnificent Duomo, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art, began in 1290 under the pontificate of Pope Nicholas IV and was completed in the second half of the 15th century. More than 20 artists worked on the magnificent façade of the Cathedral during the two centuries of construction of the church. With a population of just 20,000 people, Orvieto is considered one of the most beautiful cities of art in Italy, founded since the Etruscan and Roman times on the flat top of a large butte of volcanic tuff. This same material was used for the construction of almost all the medieval houses and churches of Orvieto, as well as its famous Gothic-style Cathedral. Image in high definition format.
