Atmaramji shrine gujranwala memorial

High Resolution JPEG Picture of The Atmaramji Shrine in Gujranwala is a memorial dedicated to Jain monk Acharya Vijayanand Suri, known for his significant contributions to Jainism. It was constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Vijayanand Suri was the first Jain monk in centuries to earn the title of Acharya. He played a pivotal role in opening Jain libraries and bringing ancient Jain manuscripts to light. He was invited to the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago but declined to attend. The shrine's design is heavily influenced by Sikh samadhi (memorial tombs), and its central chamber closely resembles the Mahan Singh Samadhi nearby. Despite claims that it might be the samadhi of Ranjit Singh's grandfather, historical evidence strongly supports its identity as Vijayanand Suri's memorial. While once an active Jain religious site, the building was commandeered by the local police in 1984, with the police using it until 2015. Currently, only the central chamber is occupied by the Deputy Police Superintendent of Gujranwala. This police presence has protected the structure from illegal occupation or damage, a common fate for historical buildings in the area.
