Port fishing village collioure
High Resolution JPEG Picture of "The port and fishing village of Collioure on the Mediterranean coast of Roussillon in the southwest of France, in the Pyrenees Orientales district, and just 7 miles from the Spanish border. The town is famous for being the place in which Derain and Matisse created the Fauvist artistic movement, both of whom lived here for a few years, amongst other artists. The famous tower landmark of Collioure is the clock tower of Notre Dames des Anges church, whose foundations were built in the sea. The belfry was built during the Middle Ages and was used as a warning tower and a lighthouse for the harbour of Collioure. In 1818 the belfry was given its characteristic dome and thus received its final distinctive appearance and itaas use as a lighthouse made redundant. The public beach on the right is St Vincent beach.Being fiercely proud of their Catalan heritage to this day, the town and the palace have been laid siege to, and claimed territorially on many occasions by both the Catalan Spanish and the French. Good copy space."
