House in the Clouds – Thorpeness, Suffolk

The water tower was built in 1923 and was disguised to blend in with the mock-Tudor and Jacobean-style buildings in the village. The windmill was built in Aldringham in 1803 and moved to Thorpeness in 1923 to pump water to feed the water tower. Thorpeness itself was developed into a ‘fantasy’ village by the landowner, Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, and included a man-made mere - known as The Meare - and a set of almshouses as well as many picturesque houses. Every August, Thorpeness Meare is the setting for the Thorpeness Regatta. (Incidental people.)
