High Resolution JPEG Picture of In 1945 the first raft was anchored in the Arousa estuary. This prototype had a single cube-shaped float made of wood that supported a framework, also made of wood, where a few meters of raw esparto rope were hung. The encouraging results achieved by this pioneer of Galician mussel farming led him to install 10 rafts the following year on the "breakwater" of the port of Vilagarcía de Arousa. In 1949, anchoring began in the Vigo estuary; in 1954 they were extended to the towns of Cambados, O Grove, Bueu, Redondela and Pobra do Caramiñal; a year later, rafts were installed in the Sada estuary and finally in 1956 in the Muros estuary.This is how, in the middle of the 20th century, with the development of the activity, it went from simple harvesting to a cutting-edge crop in the world of aquaculture, becoming a pillar of the economy of many coastal municipalities and promoting the widespread promotion of the consumption of this shellfish to this day.
