Oakland bay bridge commonly
High Resolution JPEG Picture of The Oakland Bay Bridge, commonly called the Bay Bridge, is a critical transportation link between San Francisco and Oakland, California.
Opened in 1936, it connects San Francisco to Oakland across San Francisco Bay. The bridge is divided into two major sections: the western span, connecting San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island, and the eastern span, connecting Yerba Buena Island to Oakland. The western span is a suspension bridge with two decks, while the eastern span was replaced by a self-anchored suspension design in 2013, making it the world’s largest in this category.
The total length of the bridge is approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km). It was designed by Charles H. Purcell and cost about $77 million to build. The bridge carries over 250,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the busiest bridges in the U.S.
