It is subordinate to the parish church (now the Minster) of St Margaret as it was originally constructed for the monks of St Margaret as a chapel of ease. It is now a “redundant” church - that is, it is no longer used for regular services, though it is still a consecrated church and some funerals and other services are still held there. It is also used for concerts and local events. The spire was designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1870.
