Rohan Bridge in Landerneau Brittany
High Resolution JPEG Picture of Landerneau is a town in Léon, a town at the end of the estuary, located where the maritime navigation up the Elorn estuary traditionally ended - also called Rivière de Landerneau, which allowed the port to flourish, which is now unsuitable for modern maritime navigation; it is also a city-bridge, located at the site of the last bridge4, the Rohan bridge, allowing the crossing of the coastal river and going from Léon to Cornouaille or vice versa. This place of passage for land traffic caused the commercial development of the city, including on the bridge itself, a bridge inhabited by houses on stilts, with many shops traditionally and remained toll for the benefit of Rohan, princes of Leon who had it built, until 1766. It was also built on the same bridge, or nearby, a chapel, a mill, a fishery and even a prison from which the prisoners sometimes escaped by diving into the river. Until 1930 (date of the commissioning of the Albert-Louppe bridge), it was the main crossing point between the bishoprics of Léon and Cornouaille.
