High Resolution JPEG Picture of In 1540 the carved 365-foot staircase convinced Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado that the pueblo was impregnable. The staircase was the only access to the pueblo until a road was built in the 1950s to accommodate a film crew for a John Wayne western.
